tax on packages

Post by sifpilsen on Wed Apr 09 2008, 14:54

Hi, I just wonder about tax regulations here in Ireland. I'm getting my own stuff sent from Norway, and wondered what to enter as value of the package not to get taxed a second time. All has been taxed in Norway. Is there a max value to set? In Norway the package can contain items up to 24.99 Euros in value before 25% tax kicks in.

This is border-lining saying Ireland is a part of UK, but no problem Wink Norway is not a full member of EU. Only inside the European trading agreement(don't know the english abbreviation). So, when outside the lovely union, like Russia, what is the value before tax kicks in?

yes it does.. cut and paste from citizeninfo:

Parcels from abroad

If a parcel or package comes from outside the European Union (EU), you must pay the VAT and any duties that you owe, before the parcel is delivered to you. If the parcel comes from another EU country, it is not subject to VAT or duties, as these are already included in the price of the goods within the parcel.

The manner in which VAT and customs duties are collected depends on the company that delivers the package and varies from one provider to another. One of three situations may apply:

The delivery provider pays the fee to clear the item from customs and then charges you directly
The delivery provider tells you the relevant charge and asks for payment before delivering the package to you
The delivery provider lets you deal directly with the Revenue Commissioners
The amount charged for clearing postal items through customs is up to the delivery provider and can vary from one provider to another. Usually these charges are based on a percentage of the value of the goods stated to be in the package, with a minimum charge of between €5 and €25. You should contact the delivery provider for a list of the charges.
